As Rick noted, SADD’s efforts have always been about the students and the important work ahead. allowing SADD to effectively work with the Department of Transportation and the White House to increase teen involvement. Since then, the main offices moved from their historic location in Boston to just down the street from the White House in Washington D.C. In 2014, Rick joined the national organization’s staff and in February of 2018, he was appointed as the CEO and President of SADD. Recognizing the positive impact he could make beyond his community through SADD, he interacted with the Ohio Department of Safety to make a difference. Birt started out as a SADD student when he was in high school. SADD National lets teen-to-teen interaction change behavior and encourages increased leadership in the local community. SADD is an organization of caring students who work on projects and programs in their local communities with SADD National acting as a clearinghouse of best practices and other resources to educate and support teens all over the world. There are SADD chapters in every state of the union and all the territories and even some in New Zealand. The overall goal is to keep teens informed so they can ultimately live the rich full live they deserve. However, the organization has expanded beyond that narrow focus to recognize that teens today have a variety of serious issues they must deal with beyond impaired driving and other traffic safety issues, such as bullying and the opioid epidemic. SADD now has three broad areas of focus – traffic safety substance use and, personal health and safety. SADD has been in existence for over 30 years and initially focused on alcohol impaired driving its original name was Students Against Drunk Driving. The six sub-grantee suicide prevention programs are approaching their goals from a variety of platforms, including utilizing Boys and Girls Clubs, Students Against Destructive Decisions, a Medical Center Community Volunteer Program, and tribal tradition-based programs.? The six programs train individuals, school personnel, community leaders, and professionals for recognition of at-risk behavior and delivery of effective treatment or services.? They are working in schools and community organizations to present gatekeeper programs including QPR, ASIST, and Sources of Strength.? The Chronic Disease Section Epidemiologist from the North Dakota Department of Health assisted the program to evaluate trends over the last ten years and works with a Data Subcommittee of the North Dakota Suicide Prevention Coalition.? The mission of the Coalition is to empower communities to create suicide prevention programs and to strengthen resiliency to reduce injury and death. Since the first meeting of a North Dakota Suicide Prevention Coalition in March 2007, the Coalition meets on a quarterly basis to review the progress of six rural and tribal sub-grantees funded under the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention Program. Plan for sustainable youth suicide prevention programming in North Dakota.Reduce the danger and harm of suicidal behavior.Increase public awareness that suicide is a leading cause of death among North Dakota youth and that suicide is preventable. Promote collaboration between and within North Dakota communities to create sustainable infrastructure and programs in suicide prevention for youth aged 10-24.The initiative is operating under the guidance of four goals: The North Dakota Department of Health/Division of Injury Prevention and Control developed a prevention and early intervention initiative for tribal and rural youth (ages ten to 24) whose risk of suicide mortality is 300% of the national average.
